About Church of St Giles
The Church of St Giles is an active Church of England parish church near Mountnessing in Brentwood, Essex, around one and a half miles south-east of the village. Originating in the late 11th century, it is protected as a Grade I listed building, a designation granted in 1967 in recognition of its notable timber belfry.
The aisles and arcades date mainly from the 13th century, with Roman brick, tile, stone and conglomerate reused in parts of the north aisle. Three medieval crown posts survive in the reconstructed nave roof, while the wooden belfry was added during the 15th century. The west façade bears the date 1653, and the brick chancel was rebuilt around 1818. Bodley and Garner undertook extensive work in 1889, including reconstruction of the south aisle and additions such as the vestry, organ chamber and pulpit. Notable furnishings include stained glass by Henry Holiday and Charles Eamer Kempe, a medieval chest and a 15th-century font.
