About Church of St Laurence, Blackmore
The Church of St Laurence, Blackmore is a Church of England church in the Brentwood area of Essex. Formerly associated with a religious house, it remains in ecclesiastical use and has Grade I protection in recognition of its historic importance.
Its earliest fabric belongs to the closing decades of the twelfth century. After Blackmore Priory was suppressed in 1527, the structure lost its eastern portion during the following decade, with the old priory nave retained. The present broad roof replaced an earlier arrangement of separate, lower aisle roofs in the late medieval period, and Tudor dormers were subsequently inserted. A particularly notable feature is the three-level wooden belfry, constructed around 1400 using locally felled timber. It houses five bells, among them two cast by Miles Graye in the seventeenth century. The interior contains a memorial to Thomas and Margaret Smyth. Restoration led by Frederick Chancellor from 1895 until 1905 included reconstruction of the northern arcade and part of the adjacent aisle.
