About Brentwood Cathedral

Brentwood Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Brentwood, Essex, and serves as the episcopal church of the Diocese of Brentwood. Dedicated to St Mary and St Helen, it originated as a parish church and became a cathedral in 1917. The building received Grade II* listed status in 2022.

Built in 1861 in the Gothic Revival tradition, the church was substantially enlarged from 1989 to 1991 to designs by Quinlan Terry, replacing a 1974 addition. His square-planned scheme combines early Renaissance Italian influences with English Baroque elements associated with Christopher Wren, while retaining part of the original Gothic structure. Ragstone, Welsh slate and traditionally made brick help unite the contrasting sections. Notable features include a broad semicircular portico, an octagonal lantern, clear handmade glass, gilded ceiling patterns and terracotta Stations of the Cross by sculptor Raphael Maklouf. Cardinal Hume dedicated the enlarged cathedral on 31 May 1991.
