About St Chad's Church, Harpswell

St Chad’s Church, Harpswell is an active Church of England parish church in Harpswell, Lincolnshire, within the Diocese of Lincoln and the joint Glentworth Benefice. Standing roughly 12 miles north of Lincoln, it is listed at Grade I for its historic and architectural importance.

Founded around 1042, the church retains a rare complete Anglo-Saxon tower. Its Norman south arcade was enlarged through work undertaken in the 13th and 14th centuries, while an extensive restoration followed in 1890–91. Interior features include a Norman font, medieval stained-glass fragments and carved oak bench ends, one depicting the Five Holy Wounds. Historic memorials include the 1346 effigy of priest William de Harrington, a stone figure commemorating John Gere, and a 15th-century brass showing John Whichcote and Elizabeth Tyrwhit. The tower also bears an inscribed memorial recording the installation of a clock in 1746.
