About St Mary's Church, Norton
St Mary’s Church, Norton stands by the green in Norton, within Stockton-on-Tees, County Durham. It remains an active Church of England parish church and is protected at Grade I. The building is especially significant as the sole surviving Anglo-Saxon church in the north of England arranged on a cross-shaped ground plan.
The stone church dates from about 1020 and was reorganised as a collegiate foundation in 1083. Its first design comprised a central crossing with a nave, chancel and two transepts of broadly comparable dimensions. Growth in the local population led to later alterations, including lengthening the nave. Medieval additions include the embattled tower above the crossing, which has eight openings with pointed triangular tops. Inside are stained-glass windows, sculpted memorial figures and a knight’s effigy in the northern transept. Restoration has retained substantial fabric from the Anglo-Saxon and Norman periods. Work beneath the flooring also uncovered early remains and objects beside the entrance to a medieval channel, probably created for drainage.
