About Holy Trinity Church

Holy Trinity Church was a former place of worship at Thorpe Thewles, in the Stockton-on-Tees area of County Durham. It no longer survives, having been demolished during the late nineteenth century. St James’ Church, a Grade II listed building, now occupies the same site.

The church was erected in 1848–49 as a replacement for an older, more isolated building dedicated to Thomas à Becket. Designed by the Lancaster architectural practice Sharpe and Paley, it cost an estimated £600 and provided seating for 175 people. Its dimensions were approximately 68 feet by 23 feet 6 inches. Damp and deterioration had become serious problems by the 1880s, leading to its removal and the construction of St James’ Church in 1886–87. The ruined Thomas à Becket church remains protected as both a Grade I listed structure and a scheduled monument.
