About Church of St Mary

The Church of St Mary is an active Roman Catholic parish church in central Stockton-on-Tees, County Durham. Standing at Norton Road and Major Street, near the A1305, it is protected as a Grade II listed building. It was the earliest permanent Catholic church established in the Teesside area following the Reformation.

The present church opened in 1842, replacing the need served by a Catholic chapel dating from 1790. Augustus Pugin designed the original building in the Gothic Revival tradition. Its north aisle and the first stage of the tower were completed in 1866. George Goldie designed a south aisle and sanctuary, added four years later. In 1909, Charles Hadfield provided the tower’s upper stage and a presbytery. Further work in 1970 included renewing the roof and reorganising the sanctuary. As Stockton’s Catholic community grew, the parish also helped establish missions that later developed into other churches across the town.
