About Church of St James
The Church of St James stands in Baldersby, North Yorkshire, and serves the Church of England parish shared with Dishforth. It falls under the Diocese of York and the Archdeaconry of Cleveland. Recognised as a Grade I listed building since 26 May 1971, it remains the local parish church.
Construction took place from 1856 until 1858 to plans by William Butterfield, following a commission from William Dawnay, the seventh Viscount Downe. Butterfield gave the building a High Victorian design, using coursed stonework, finer ashlar dressings and red roof tiles. Its layout comprises a tower at the western end, a five-bay nave flanked by aisles, a porch on the south side and an aisleless chancel of two bays. The 1.38-acre site also contains a Grade I listed lychgate and a churchyard boundary wall protected at Grade II. The earliest burials there date to 1857.
