About St Peter's Church, Bishopton

St Peter's Church stands in Bishopton, County Durham, and remains an active Church of England parish church. It is part of the Diocese of Durham, within Auckland archdeaconry and Stockton deanery. The building has Grade II listed status for its historic and architectural interest.

Although its origins probably reach back to the 13th century, the church was substantially rebuilt in 1846–47 by Sharpe and Paley, with the north aisle and western tower added at that time. Constructed mainly from sandstone, with limestone used in the chancel, it has roofs of green slate. The three-stage tower features a clock, bell openings, a stair turret and a battlemented top. Medieval grave-slab fragments survive in the walls, while the interior contains a 13th-century font and an 1889 reredos made from Caen stone and marble.
