About St Peter's Church, Prickwillow
St Peter’s Church, Prickwillow, stands in Prickwillow, near Ely in Cambridgeshire. Formerly used for Anglican worship, it ceased regular use in 2011. The building received Grade II protection in March 2026.
Richard Reynolds Rowe, an architect responsible for numerous projects across Cambridgeshire, designed the church. Construction took place from 1866 until 1868, after changes to the River Great Ouse contributed to the village’s expansion. Flintwork, brick accents and timber piles were used in its construction. The layout includes a nave, crossing bell-cote, two transepts and a porch on the south side. A bell cast in 1691 came from Ely Cathedral. The cathedral also provided a richly sculpted marble font of Italian origin, accompanied by a suspended cover featuring an angel. After redundancy, the font went back to the cathedral. Burials took place in Ely because the church had no cemetery.
