About Countess Free Church Ely
Countess Free Church Ely is an active congregation in central Ely, Cambridgeshire. Its chapel on Chapel Street, a short distance from Ely Cathedral, is protected as a Grade II listed building. Worship takes place at 10.30 each Sunday, while weekday groups welcome various age groups and provide space for community gatherings. Baptist principles shape its life, with baptism for professing believers and decisions made collectively by members.
Selina Hastings, Countess of Huntingdon, established the congregation in 1785. It belongs to her Connexion, a Protestant body comprising slightly more than twenty congregations, and was previously affiliated with the Congregational Union. An association with the Eastern Baptist Association began in 2019. More recently, the church has cooperated with other local congregations on Ely’s foodbank, debt support and secondary-school chaplaincy.
