About Parish Church of St John the Baptist

The Parish Church of St John the Baptist is a Church of England parish church in Finchingfield, Essex. Dating from around 1170, it remains an important historic building and has held Grade I listed status since 1967.

Built of flint rubble with limestone and clunch detailing, the church began with a nave, chancel and west tower. Extensive alterations followed during the late thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, adding aisles, chapels and a clerestory, while Henry Stock oversaw restoration work in the nineteenth century. Norman survivals include the tower, its arch and the western entrance. The tower was heightened in the fifteenth century and later received an eighteenth-century timber lantern. Memorials commemorate Richard Marriot, Robert Kempe, and John and Elizabeth Berners, whose brass figures are shown in prayer.
