About Church of St Peter in Ely
The Church of St Peter in Ely stands on Broad Street in Ely, Cambridgeshire. It is a Grade II listed place of worship within the Church of England and the Diocese of Ely, following the Anglo-Catholic tradition. The church is a proprietary chapel administered by the trustees of a registered charity.
Catharine Maria Sparke founded the church in memory of her husband, Canon Edward Bowyer Sparke, to serve people in Ely’s riverside area. Its foundation stone was laid in 1889, and it was dedicated by the Bishop of Ely and opened for worship on 30 June 1890. Built of stone in an Early Decorated style, it has a nave, chancel, south porch and a south-west turret containing a single bell. Notable fittings include an 1892 east window by Charles Eamer Kempe’s studio, depicting the Virgin and Child with several saints, and an early wooden rood screen and loft designed by Sir Ninian Comper.
