About Church of St John the Baptist

The Church of St John the Baptist is the Church of England parish church serving Thaxted in Essex. Standing prominently above the town and nearby countryside, it remains a place of parish worship and is protected as a Grade I listed building. Since 1914, the parish has belonged to the Diocese of Chelmsford.

The earliest fabric dates from about 1340, although construction continued in stages until around 1510, producing a large church in the Perpendicular Gothic style. Its scale reflects Thaxted’s medieval prosperity through cutlery production and the wool trade. The nave and aisles are among the oldest surviving sections, followed by the transepts and porches. The western tower and its slender spire were added between about 1475 and 1500, reaching approximately 55 metres. The chancel, adjoining chapels, clerestory and crossing arches were completed later. Storms caused damage during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, including the partial collapse of the spire in 1814, followed by reconstruction.
