About St. Nicholas Church, Berden
St. Nicholas Church, Berden is an active Church of England parish church in the Bishop's Stortford area of Essex. This Grade I listed building belongs to a shared benefice within the Diocese of Chelmsford, alongside churches in Manuden, Quendon and Rickling.
The nave originated in the 1100s, while the chancel and transepts were added during the following century. Its west tower dates to the 1400s and displays the Perpendicular Gothic style. Built from flint rubble, clunch and limestone, the church follows a cross-shaped plan and has red-tiled roofs. A substantial restoration costing £2,000 took place in 1868, when part of the chancel was reconstructed and a porch was added on the south side. Memorials recall families associated with Berden Hall and Berden Priory, as well as Henry Trigg, a parish constable killed while defending his property in 1814.
