About St Mary's Church, Chickney
St Mary’s Church stands at Chickney in Essex. This former Anglican parish church is now maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust and holds Grade I listed status. Although no longer in regular ecclesiastical use, its fabric preserves evidence from several phases of English church building.
The earliest work belongs to the closing decades of the tenth century or the beginning of the eleventh, and the church was noted in the Domesday survey. Flint rubble forms the main walls, complemented by limestone and clunch detailing, red-tiled roofs and a wooden southern porch. The nave and chancel retain Anglo-Saxon character, while later elements are Gothic. Under Henry III, the chancel was enlarged; a three-tier western tower was erected in the fourteenth century, followed by the porch in the early fifteenth. Features include nave windows from before 1066, thirteenth-century lancets and a trefoil-topped piscina, a medieval font with a sixteenth-century lid, and a Georgian pulpit.
