About St Stephen's Church

St Stephen’s Church is an Anglican church on Vicarage View in Kirkstall, Leeds, West Yorkshire. Occupying an elevated site with views towards Kirkstall Abbey, it is protected as a Grade II building, a designation granted on 5 August 1976.

Building commenced in 1828, with worship beginning there in 1829. Robert Dennis Chantrell, who also designed Leeds Parish Church, created the Gothic Revival building from finely worked gritstone, topped with slate. Leeds architects Perkin and Backhouse restored and enlarged it during 1863 and 1864, while Henry Walker carried out additional work in 1874. Its western clock tower rises through three levels to a spire, and the nave is lit by five narrow pointed windows. Interior details include a timber screen behind the altar featuring saints, a square carved pulpit, and an eastern stained-glass scene of the glorified Christ beside St Stephen and St Paul. Burstall and Taylor produced several carvings during the Victorian restoration.
