About St Matthias Church
St Matthias Church is an Anglican place of worship in Burley, within Leeds, West Yorkshire. It remains part of the Church of England, with a charismatic identity, and is protected at Grade II* level. In 2018, its congregation combined with Riverside Church. University of Leeds change ringers use its bells.
Building commenced during 1853 and concluded the following year. The Leeds practice Perkins & Backhouse prepared the design, and Thomas Moxon of Headingley undertook construction. John Smith, a banker, provided the principal funding, while William Beckett financed the spire. Winn and Pawson supplied the timber fittings and carved wooden details. Robert Mawer was responsible for the font, commemorative tablet and sculptural stonework. Expansion in 1886 added an aisle on the northern side and a porch at the western entrance, increasing accommodation from 450 people to 650. The present eight-bell ring superseded an earlier group of six.
