About St Mary's Church, Whitkirk

St Mary’s Church, Whitkirk, is situated on Selby Road in Leeds, West Yorkshire. It remains in use as a Church of England parish church, serving within the Leeds archdeaconry and diocese. Recognised as a Grade I listed building in 1963, it has a prominent place among the city’s historic churches.

Worship has taken place at this location since at least 1185, although the surviving structure is mainly fifteenth-century and dates from about 1450. Major repairs and alterations were carried out in 1855 and 1856, while G. F. Bodley replaced the chancel in 1901. The interior was reorganised in 1990. Outside, the western tower is strengthened by angled buttresses and topped with carved, obelisk-like pinnacles, alongside a lead-covered spire. Within the church are eight-sided nave columns, an alabaster monument depicting Sir Robert Scargill and his wife, and the burial memorial of engineer John Smeaton.
