About St. James', Seacroft
St. James’, Seacroft stands on The Green in Leeds, West Yorkshire. It is a Church of England parish church serving within the Leeds archdeaconry and diocese, and remains in use for worship. Dating from the mid-19th century, the building is recognised as Grade II listed.
T. Hellyer designed the church, which was erected during 1845 and 1846 in a Gothic Revival form. Its exterior combines finely worked masonry with stone roofing, alongside slim pointed windows and an eastern elevation divided into three sections. The south entrance has a porch beneath a pitched gable. On the north side, a tower of three levels preserves its first clock and supports a tapering masonry spire. Of the nave’s five bays, two were partitioned in 1988 for kitchen and toilet facilities. The initial eight-sided font was moved outdoors after a new font commemorating Ann Wilson was presented in 1878.
