About St Cross
St Cross is an active Church of England parish church serving Middleton in Leeds, West Yorkshire. It belongs to the Armley deanery, within the Leeds archdeaconry and Diocese of Leeds.
The parish developed after Middleton’s rapid population growth following the construction of a council estate during the 1920s. A timber mission building opened in 1925, followed by the present church in 1933, and an independent parish was established two years later. F. L. Charlton designed the building in an Early Christian style, using a concrete structure faced with brick. Its most prominent exterior feature is a 60-foot Italianate bell tower containing one bell. Inside are broad Gothic arches, rounded arcades and fittings designed by Charlton and crafted by Robert Thompson of Kilburn. The rear two bays were divided in 1982 to provide a parish room and kitchen.
