About St Augustine of Hippo Church

St Augustine of Hippo Church is a Church of England parish church in Leeds, West Yorkshire. Often known locally as Wrangthorn, it stands near Hyde Park Corner, north of Woodhouse Moor. The church remains in use for Sunday worship, baptisms, marriages and funerals, while also hosting music, volunteering and other community activities. It has Grade II listed status.

The Leeds Church Extension Society acquired the site in 1866, and a temporary iron church opened the following year. James Barlow Fraser designed the permanent building, which was consecrated in 1871 after construction largely took place during 1870 and 1871. Built from local gritstone with dressed stone detailing, it follows the Gothic Revival tradition. Its prominent three-part steeple was finished in 1878 and rises to 57 metres, making the darkened stone structure a recognisable local feature. A single bell hangs within, and a separate, smaller church hall dates from 1934.
