About St Aidan's Church
St Aidan’s Church is an active Church of England parish church in Harehills, Leeds, West Yorkshire. It belongs to the Diocese of Leeds and holds Grade II* listed status. Daily celebration of Mass is a distinctive part of its worshipping life. A neighbouring hall forms part of the church site.
Consecrated on 13 October 1894 by John Pulleine, then Bishop of Richmond, the church was designed by Newcastle architects Johnson and Crawford Hick. Its large red-brick Victorian structure follows a basilican plan. The apse contains extensive mosaics by Frank Brangwyn, finished in 1916 after concerns that local smoke would damage his original painted scheme. Covering about 93 square metres, they depict episodes from St Aidan’s life, including his preaching and care for people in poverty. The organ was made by James Jepson Binns in 1896 and remains in its original, unaltered condition.
