About Parish Church of St Ricarius Or St Riquier

The Parish Church of St Ricarius Or St Riquier stands in Aberford, within Leeds, West Yorkshire. It is an active Church of England parish church in the Diocese of Leeds and the Archdeaconry of York. The church has been protected as a Grade II listed building since 1967.

Most of the present building dates to Anthony Salvin’s reconstruction in 1861, which replaced much of a church originating in the 12th century. Earlier fabric includes the Norman tower, a Norman window and another window from the 13th century. Built of magnesian limestone and roofed with slate, the church has a west tower topped by a low octagonal spire, a nave with aisles, a chancel and a south chapel. Inside are four-bay arcades, an eight-sided stone font with a richly carved timber cover, and the anvil of local blacksmith Samuel Hick. A stained-glass window portrays “Ricarius Rex 720”, identified with St Richard the Pilgrim.
