About Leeds Minster
Leeds Minster is an active Church of England parish church in Leeds, West Yorkshire, dedicated to Saint Peter. Formerly known as Leeds Parish Church, it received minster status in 2012. The church occupies a site associated with the city’s earliest place of worship and is protected as a Grade I listed building.
Christian worship may have taken place here by the seventh century, and a church in Leeds appears in the Domesday survey of 1086. Anglo-Scandinavian cross fragments discovered during later building work provide further evidence of the site’s long history. After rebuilding following a fourteenth-century fire, the church was completely replaced in the nineteenth century when the older structure proved unsafe. Robert Dennis Chantrell designed the present Gothic Revival building, which has a cross-shaped plan, ashlar masonry and slate-covered roofs. Funded through local voluntary contributions, it was completed and consecrated in 1841, with further alterations made to the eastern end between 1870 and 1880.
