About Church of St John the Evangelist

The Church of St John the Evangelist is an active Church of England parish church in Oulton, Leeds, within the Diocese of Leeds and Leeds archdeaconry. It has held Grade II* listed status since 1964.

Designed by Rickman and Hutchinson, the church was constructed from 1827 to 1829 in an Early English Gothic style. Its exterior combines finely dressed sandstone with slate roofing. At the western end, a tower of three stages rises to an eight-sided spire supported by flying buttresses. The nave and porch stand on the north side, while a six-sided vestry is positioned to the south. Inside are pointed arches with three moulded layers and groin vaulting decorated with carved bosses. The organ occupies the west end, and a memorial honours the founder, John Blayds, who died in the year building work began.
