About St Catherine of Siena
St Catherine of Siena is a Church of England parish church on Hastilar Road South in Sheffield’s Richmond district. Designed by Basil Spence and completed in 1959, it is protected as a Grade II listed building. The church follows a Catholic tradition of Anglican worship and is under the episcopal care of the Bishop of Beverley.
A temporary chapel served the expanding Woodthorpe estate from 1935, but rapid population growth soon prompted plans for a larger building. War damage funds transferred from a bombed church in Attercliffe eventually enabled construction on the original chapel site. Spence’s restrained brick design includes slender windows, an adjoining hall and a bell tower connected by a glass corridor. Inside are a black metal altar with a wooden surface and a fossil-bearing limestone font. An organ was fitted after opening, while Ronald Pope’s sculpture was placed on the tower in 1966. Extensive restoration took place in 1997, before the building received listed status.
