About Jesmond Parish Church

Jesmond Parish Church is an active Anglican parish on Eskdale Terrace in Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne. Also formally called Clayton Memorial Church, it belongs to the Church of England and retains a conservative Evangelical identity. The building has Grade II listed protection, while the congregation is reported to number about 1,100 people.

Its foundation followed Richard Clayton’s death in 1856, when members of his former congregation opposed the proposed change in theological direction at St Thomas’ Church. They formed a committee to establish another church committed to Reformed Evangelical teaching. John Dobson provided the architectural design, and the new building was dedicated in 1861, at a time when fields still surrounded much of the site. A vestry was constructed in 1874. Inside is a pipe organ made in 1913 by the Leeds firm of James Jepson Binns, using some components from an instrument built by T. C. Lewis in 1895. It has since deteriorated badly and is not in use.
