About Church of St Michael And Presbytery Attached
The Church of St Michael and Presbytery Attached is a Catholic place of worship on Westmorland Road in Elswick, Newcastle upon Tyne. It belongs to the Hexham and Newcastle diocese. The church and adjoining clergy house are protected at Grade II*, reflecting their special architectural and historic importance.
Building work began in 1871, although a ceremonial stone was not laid until 11 June 1889. Construction was finished in 1891, and the church was consecrated on 24 October that year. The church and presbytery received listed status on 17 December 1971. Their boundary walls, gates and railings were separately designated Grade II on 30 March 1987. Elswick was historically within Northumberland, becoming part of Tyne and Wear in 1974.
