About St Andrew's Church, Sapiston
St Andrew’s Church, Sapiston, stands south of the village near Grange Farm and the Black Bourne, within the Thetford area of Suffolk. Formerly Anglican, it served a settlement that was abandoned during the medieval period. The parish merged with Honington in 1972, and the church closed in 1974. Now maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust, it is protected at Grade I.
A Norman doorway from the 1100s is the earliest surviving element, while the nave, chancel and western tower largely belong to the 1300s. Built chiefly of flint with ragstone details and tiled roofs, the church was restored in 1847. Its three-level tower has a battlemented top, and the 15th-century porch incorporates medieval grave covers in its floor. Inside are a 13th-century octagonal font, remnants of a painting showing Saint Edmund’s death, George II’s royal arms and a memorial to the poet Robert Bloomfield. Four bells survive but have been removed from their fittings.
