About Church of St Michael and All Angels
The Church of St Michael and All Angels is a Church of England parish church at Copford, near Colchester in Essex. Dating chiefly from the Norman period, it is protected at Grade I, a designation awarded in 1965.
Construction began sometime after 1130, possibly to provide a private place of worship for Copford Hall, then held by London’s bishops. Surviving Norman work includes a curved eastern apse beneath its original masonry vault. Rubble, reused Roman brick and later medieval brick were employed in the walls. The southern aisle appeared around the end of the 13th century or beginning of the 14th, and a 15th-century alteration replaced the nave’s earlier vaulted ceiling with timber. At the west end stands a wooden belfry from the late 1300s, clad with oak shingles. Further features include Romanesque stone carving, a medieval screen and richly painted Norman interiors showing sacred figures, zodiac emblems and plant ornament. The paintings underwent several restorations after their 19th-century rediscovery.
