About St Peter ad Vincula, Coggeshall
St Peter ad Vincula, Coggeshall is a Church of England church in Coggeshall, Essex. Its dedication refers to Saint Peter’s imprisonment. The large building reflects the wealth brought to East Anglia by the medieval wool trade and is protected at Grade I, the highest category of listed status.
The present church was finished between 1400 and 1425, replacing earlier places of worship from the Saxon and Norman periods on the same site. Following the demolition of the church at nearby Marks Hall in 1933, several objects were transferred here. Among them is a memorial to Mary Honywood, who lived from 1567 to 1630. Now kept in the sacristy, it commemorates a woman reported to have had 367 descendants still living when she died.
