About St Peter's Church, Sudbury
St Peter’s Church, Sudbury stands on Market Hill in central Sudbury, Suffolk. Formerly an Anglican place of worship, it is now Sudbury Arts Centre, hosting arts, heritage and community activities. The church is Grade I listed and cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust.
A church was recorded here by 1180, when it served as a chapel linked to St Gregory’s. The present flint building developed in phases between the 14th and 15th centuries, combining Decorated and Perpendicular Gothic architecture. William Butterfield restored it in 1858–59, removing galleries and box pews, renewing the pulpit and adding stained glass by Hardman & Co. Notable features include the embattled west tower, a medieval panelled nave ceiling with gilded bosses, a 15th-century octagonal font, a three-manual organ dating from 1911, and ten bells, three of which were cast around 1470.
