About Borley Church
Borley Church is an active Church of England parish church near Sudbury in Suffolk. It belongs to the combined parish of Borley and Liston and is among the fifteen churches within the North Hinckford Benefice, under the Diocese of Chelmsford. Recognised as a building of exceptional historic interest, it has Grade I listed status.
The compact stone church has origins in about 1050, with the nave possibly surviving from the eleventh century. Work carried out from the 1300s to the 1500s gave much of the building its Perpendicular Gothic appearance, particularly the chancel and tower at the west end. A south porch completes the main arrangement, while the embattled tower houses three bells in an early oak support. One bell was made in 1574 and the other two in Ipswich in 1926. A topiary-lined approach reaches the porch. Among the interior memorials is a substantial marble tomb depicting Sir Edward Waldegrave, a councillor to Mary I, alongside his wife, Frances.
