About St Laurence and All Saints Church
St Laurence and All Saints Church is a medieval Church of England church in Eastwood, Southend-on-Sea, Essex. Standing beside the boundary of London Southend Airport, it is protected as a Grade I listed building. Its churchyard includes chest tombs from the 18th century and several war graves in later northern extensions.
A church existed here by 1100, while the present nave dates from the 12th century and retains Norman window openings. The chancel and south aisle were added during the 13th century, followed by the north aisle and chancel roof in the 14th century. A 15th-century nave roof and 16th-century brick porch reflect further phases of development. Built principally from ragstone rubble and flint with limestone details, the fabric also contains Roman and Tudor bricks. Interior features include a Norman font, early doors retaining original ironwork, and medieval timberwork incorporating a priest’s room. William White directed substantial restoration during the 1870s, including the installation of new seating.
