About St Mary's Church, Chilton

St Mary’s Church, Chilton is a former Church of England parish church near Sudbury in Suffolk. Standing east-north-east of Sudbury’s centre, it is bordered by farmland to the north and east. The church is redundant, has Grade I listed status and is maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust.

Dating from the 15th century, with construction recorded around 1450, its Perpendicular Gothic nave and chancel are built in flint. The flint south porch has brick cornerwork and a shaped brick parapet. During the 16th century, a brick western tower and the Crane chantry chapel were added, along with a Tudor window above the nave’s northern entrance. The tower features large brick buttresses, flint battlements and four ornamented pinnacles. The chapel contains Crane family tombs, including an alabaster figure of George Crane, and a wall monument to Sir Robert Crane and his two wives.
