About Church of St Gregory, Sudbury
The Church of St Gregory, Sudbury is an active Church of England parish church in Sudbury, Suffolk. With origins reaching back to at least the tenth century, it remains an important historic place of worship and has held Grade I listed status since 1952.
Most of the present flint-faced building was constructed during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries in the Perpendicular Gothic style, with work associated with Archbishop Simon Sudbury. Its features include a western bell tower, clerestoried nave, four-bay medieval arcade, spacious chancel with tall windows, south porch and an early sixteenth-century brick vestry. A richly carved fifteenth-century font cover rises to about 3.7 metres, while medieval woodwork also survives in the choir stalls and former rood screen. The church closed in 1860 because of its deteriorating condition and reopened after restoration by William Butterfield, completed in 1862. It also preserves Archbishop Sudbury’s mummified head following his death during the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381.
