About St John the Baptist's Church, Stanton
St John the Baptist’s Church stands west of Stanton, Suffolk. This former Anglican church is now redundant and cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust. It is Grade II* listed. The west tower survives complete, while the nave and chancel remain open to the sky.
Originating in the 14th century, the church was enlarged and altered in the 15th century, then restored in 1616. After its parish merged with nearby All Saints in 1756, the building fell into disrepair. Work in the 1980s returned the nave and chancel walls to their original height. Flint, red brick and freestone are used in the fabric, with rendering on some wall sections. The four-stage tower has diagonal buttresses, a stair turret, paired-light bell openings and a battlemented parapet with chequered decoration. Its open ground stage allowed processions to pass around the building. Other features include medieval doorways and a 14th-century south porch.
