About St Michael's Church, Berechurch
St Michael’s Church, Berechurch, stands beside Berechurch Hall Road, south of Colchester in Essex. Formerly an Anglican chapel serving Holy Trinity in Colchester, it was never a parish church. Worship ceased after the congregation relocated in 1973, and the building is now redundant. It is protected at Grade II*; the Audley Chapel is cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust, while the remainder has been adapted for other purposes.
The medieval west tower dates from the 14th century, while the Audley Chapel was added in the early 1500s. Most of the church was reconstructed by Charles Pertwee in 1872, retaining these older sections and incorporating historic details; the south porch followed in 1878. Brick walls, stone dressings and tiled roofs define the exterior. Inside the chapel, a carved hammerbeam roof displays royal and heraldic symbols. Memorials include the 1648 monument to Sir Henry Audley, with his armoured marble effigy and figures representing his five children.
