About St James' Chapel, Lindsey

St James’ Chapel stands at Monks Eleigh, near Lindsey in Suffolk. This small medieval chantry served Lindsey Castle, whose surviving earthworks lie about 200 metres to the south-east. Although no longer used as a chapel, it is protected as both a Grade I listed building and a scheduled monument.

Documentary records date from the early 1240s, while most of the surviving fabric belongs to the 13th century and incorporates older masonry. Built of stone, flint and brick, the chapel retains lancet windows, an arched stone entrance and a late 13th-century piscina beneath a trefoil arch. Repairs around the late 15th or early 16th century lowered the roof and may have reduced the building’s length. Religious use ended in 1545, after which the Crown granted it to Thomas Turner, who adapted it as a barn.
