About Church of St Mary

The Church of St Mary in Monks Eleigh, Suffolk, is a Church of England parish church. It is protected at Grade I, recognising its exceptional historic and architectural importance. The church continues to serve its parish and forms part of the area’s medieval ecclesiastical heritage.

Built during the fourteenth century, with a date of about 1350, the church was damaged by a lightning strike in 1758. Arthur Blomfield oversaw an extensive restoration in 1868. Among its notable memorials are the graves of the antiquarian Robert Ryece, who lived from 1555 to 1638, and his wife. Ryece was laid to rest on the northern side of the altar, while his wife was buried on its southern side.
