About Saint Mary the Virgin
Saint Mary the Virgin stands on Foulness Island in Essex. Formerly a Church of England parish church, it closed permanently in May 2010 and was subsequently offered for sale. The building is Grade II listed.
Local worship began in 1407, when Joan de Bohun secured permission for a priest to hold daily Mass in an island chapel. After the chantry was suppressed during the Reformation, Foulness became its own parish and a timber-framed church was built. This was replaced after parishioners agreed in 1848 that a larger building was needed. Designed by William Hambley in the Early English style, the present church has a spire, aisled nave and chancel, and was consecrated in 1853. Trinity House contributed towards a spire tall enough to guide sailors. The restrained interior contains little stained glass and an organ made in 1866. The churchyard includes older gravestones, three First World War naval burials and the island’s war memorial.
