About St Mary's Church, Brent Eleigh

St Mary’s Church, Brent Eleigh is a Church of England parish church serving Brent Eleigh, near Monks Eleigh in Suffolk. The church continues in its parish role and has Grade I listed status.

The building dates from about 1250, although its Decorated Gothic character has also been associated with the late thirteenth or early fourteenth century. Its font reflects the earlier Early English Gothic tradition. Eighteenth-century box pews in the nave incorporate some bench ends from the seventeenth century. Three fourteenth-century wall paintings were uncovered behind a Victorian reredos in 1961. The chancel contains a memorial to Edward Colman, who died in 1739, made by Thomas Dunn. A substantial collection of about 1,700 volumes was entrusted to the incumbent in the early eighteenth century and kept in a brick addition at the church’s east end.
