About St Mary's Church, Mundon
St Mary’s Church in Mundon is a former Anglican place of worship in this Essex village. The Grade I listed church occupies land enclosed by the moat at Mundon Hall. A conservation charity has looked after the building since 1975, carrying out repairs with support from English Heritage. Visitors have been admitted since 2009, and worship is held annually.
The earliest surviving parts belong to the 1300s, although evidence suggests that a previous building may have occupied the site. The structure combines a rendered rubble nave, a brick chancel and a timber-framed passage around the tower, beneath tiled roofs. A wooden bell stage was constructed during the 1500s, and the northern entrance porch followed around 1600. Extensive brick reconstruction took place in the 1700s after a period of neglect. The interior retains Georgian enclosed seating, an octagonal preaching desk and wall-painted devotional texts. Over the eastern window, a painted design imitates drawn curtains with suspended tassels.
