About Isleham Priory Church
Isleham Priory Church is in Isleham, Suffolk, on the northern side of the village. It formed part of a Benedictine house and was adapted for agricultural use following the Reformation. The former chapel is the monastic site’s only structure still standing, while traces of the remaining buildings lie underground. It has Grade I protection and the wider site is a scheduled monument.
The priory was established around 1100 in connection with Saint-Jacut-de-la-Mer Abbey in Brittany. This largely intact Norman church is built of limestone and locally sourced clunch rubble. Its layout includes a two-bay nave, a chancel and a curved sanctuary at the eastern end. A round arch supported by paired columns marks the division between nave and chancel, and several slender Norman windows survive. Changes include medieval repairs, a wide brick-arched entrance added during conversion into a barn in the 1500s or 1600s, and a later increase in the roof height.
