About Church of All Saints
The Church of All Saints stands at Rayne, in the Braintree area of Essex. It is an active Anglican parish church within the Church of England and has Grade I protection. The congregation shares its ministry with the neighbouring parishes of Great Notley and Black Notley, while services, prayer gatherings and local activities continue at the church.
A place of worship may have existed here since Norman times. Sir William Capel commissioned the western tower in about 1510; its patterned red and blue bricks, battlements, corner pinnacles and family emblems are distinctive examples of Tudor workmanship. Unsafe medieval sections were removed during the 1830s, and Lewis Vulliamy created a new nave and chancel using flint rubble and dressed stone in 1840–41. An internal refurbishment in 2020–21 introduced movable chairs, modern heating and audio-visual equipment. Older details include an octagonal font from the fourteenth century, surviving pieces of medieval glass, Flemish carvings, six change-ringing bells and a Victorian pipe organ.
