About Church of St John Lateran, Hengrave
The Church of St John Lateran stands at Hengrave, near Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk. Formerly Hengrave’s parish church, it ceased that role after the parish joined neighbouring Flempton in 1589. It later became a burial place for people associated with Hengrave Hall, whose residents have maintained the building. The church is listed at Grade I.
Dating from around 1250, the small church has a circular tower and a southern porch. The tower is its earliest surviving part, while the porch was added by the de Hemegrave family around the late fourteenth or early fifteenth century, probably during wider rebuilding. Flint decoration on the battlements includes family heraldry, a crowned emblem with arrows, and religious initials. Inside are several important memorials, including tombs for Margaret, Countess of Bath, members of the Kytson family, Thomas Darcy and Sir Thomas Gage, as well as inscribed floor slabs commemorating the Gage family.
