About Norman Tower
Norman Tower stands in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, apart from St Edmundsbury Cathedral, for which it serves as a bell tower. Also called St James’ Gate, it is one of two structures remaining from the former abbey complex. This Grade I listed building is also protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument and is regarded as an important example of Norman architecture in East Anglia.
Abbot Anselm oversaw its construction between 1120 and 1148, when it formed the abbey’s principal entrance. Following the dissolution of the abbey in 1539, it became the bell tower for St James’ Church, now the cathedral. Its Romanesque fabric has survived with relatively little alteration, although the roof was replaced in 1811. Part of the eastern side of the arch fell after bell-ringing in 1818, causing extensive cracking and prompting later structural investigations. Raised ground around the site means the tower now stands nearly six feet below street level.
