About Parish Church of St Germanus
The Parish Church of St Germanus is an active Anglican place of worship at Faulkbourne, in the Witham area of Essex. It belongs to the Witham and Villages benefice. Protected at Grade I since 1967, the church honours Germanus, an early bishop from Auxerre who travelled to Britain around 429 to oppose Pelagian teaching. Its dedication may relate to a consecration held on 31 July, his feast date.
The building began in the Norman period during the 1100s, with further additions made in the following century. Flint fragments and bricks from the Roman era form most of its walls, while reddish clay tiles cover the roof. Its bell turret is timber-built and topped by a spire. On the southern side stand a brick porch and vestry. Arthur Blomfield directed substantial restoration work in 1886, costing £800. The interior includes several monuments commemorating members of the Bullock family, proprietors of Faulkbourne Hall from 1637 until 1897.
