About Unitarian Chapel
Unitarian Chapel stands on Mary Street in Taunton, Somerset. This Grade II* listed place of worship remains in use by the local congregation, with services held twice each month. Its long history reflects the development of religious nonconformity in the town.
A Baptist meeting house was established on or close to the site in 1670, despite official opposition to worship outside the Church of England. The present chapel replaced it in 1712 and was paid for by the congregation. Its worship gradually became Unitarian during the eighteenth century, before such practice was made lawful in 1813. Taunton’s Presbyterian congregation joined the church in 1814. Extensive nineteenth-century alterations gave the exterior its Italianate appearance, while further structural repairs and decorative conservation were completed in the early twenty-first century.
